NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. — A Moncks Corner man is facing felony drug charges after North Charleston police say they found suspected fentanyl and methamphetamine in his car during a Sunday‑night patrol near Ashley Phosphate Road.
Officers were monitoring the area around several hotels known for narcotics activity when they noticed a vehicle driving slowly and erratically.
The driver, identified as Richard Yarborough, 57, reportedly stopped abruptly and pulled into a closed business lot at Mazyck Road and Ashley Phosphate Road.
Police say Yarborough told officers he was trying to reach a nearby lodge, but his nervous behavior and difficulty producing identification raised concern.
When officers asked him to step out of the vehicle, they spotted an open toolbox in the back seat containing a small bag of crystalline substance.
Field testing indicated the substance — roughly 0.57 grams — was presumptively positive for both fentanyl and methamphetamine, according to investigators.
Yarborough was arrested and charged with possession with intent to distribute fentanyl and possession of methamphetamine. He was booked into the Al Cannon Detention Center.
Police say the arrest is part of ongoing efforts to curb drug activity along the busy Ashley Phosphate corridor, where officers have increased patrols near hotels and businesses following multiple narcotics complaints.
