Alcoa Foundation announces $30,000 grant to local nonprofit

AF_logo_blueGOOSE CREEK, S.C.–The South Carolina Chapter of the Nature Conservancy (TNC) was recently selected for a $30,000 grant from Alcoa Foundation to support marine restoration on South Carolina’s coastlines.

The Alcoa Foundation grant follows Alcoa’s announcement that it sold its ownership stake in the Mt. Holly aluminum smelter to Century Aluminum Company effective December 1, 2014.

The $30,000 grant will support a fish monitoring site in South Carolina to study the productivity of existing oyster reefs in the South-Atlantic region. TNC will continue its work to enhance marine systems, support fish habitat and production, maintain water quality, and mitigate shoreline erosion.

Through initial funding from Alcoa Foundation in 2008, TNC jump started its marine program in South Carolina to restore and maintain habitats in the state’s marshes and bay areas.

“Through this grant, Alcoa has the opportunity to leave an impact on a significant environmental program in the Lowcountry,” said John Martin, GPP-U.S. President.

Alcoa Foundation is one of the largest corporate foundations in the US with assets of approximately $436 million.

Founded more than 50 years ago, Alcoa Foundation has invested more than $350 million since 1952.
