SUMMERVILLE, S.C. — Authorities are investigating after human remains were discovered inside a tent in a wooded area off Maple Street in Summerville over the weekend.

The Berkeley County Coroner’s Office said it was notified of the discovery at 7:24 p.m. on Saturday, June 27.

According to officials, the remains were found inside a tent in a wooded area near Maple Street and were in an advanced stage of decomposition.

Investigators have not released any information about the person’s identity, age or gender.

An autopsy will be performed to help positively identify the remains and determine the cause and manner of death, according to the Coroner’s Office.

The Berkeley County Coroner’s Office and the Summerville Police Department responded to the scene and are jointly investigating the case.

Authorities have not released additional details as the investigation continues.
