BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C.–On Wednesday, a judge sentenced a Goose Creek man to two years in prison followed by an additional five years on probation.
As a condition of the probation, 66-year-old Lonnie Garrett will be ordered to pay approximately $100,000 restitution to Animal Rescue & Relief and the SPCA.
Garrett avoided trial by pleading guilty to ten counts of ill treatment of animals in August of 2014.
In February 2013, Garrett was originally charged with 43 counts after deputies say they found close to 200 dead dogs behind his home in Goose Creek.
According to deputies, Garrett made little effort to bury many of the animals. Authorities say neighbors first alerted deputies of the problem after complaining of a foul odor in the air.
Deputies say they found about 45 dogs barely hanging on to life. They were taken from his home and many were placed in the care of the Berkeley County SPCA.
Family members have always maintained that Garrett is not a bad person. At the time of his arrest, his wife stated that her husband cared for those dogs; however, after he became sick he got in over his head.
