BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C.–Berkeley County code enforcement officers are allowed to once again carry firearms while on the job, according to county spokesperson Michael Mule.
“Based on council’s position Monday night, Berkeley County has decided to allow qualified code enforcement officers to choose whether or not to carry a handgun in the performance of their duties, while we work together on a more clear resolution,” stated Mule.
Mule stated that as of Wednesday, three of the four qualified code enforcement officers have chosen to carry a handgun.
After taking office in January, Berkeley Co. Supervisor Bill Peagler ordered that the code enforcement officers stop carrying their handguns, calling them a liability. Several council members, including Jack Schurlknight, disagreed.
Council members are expected to take up the issue again at a later date.
