MONCKS CORNER, S.C. — A $1.2 million federal grant is headed to Moncks Corner to help build a new pedestrian‑focused mobility corridor, a project local leaders say will improve safety and connectivity for residents across the growing town.
The funding, announced Monday by Rep. Nancy Mace (R‑S.C.), comes through the Transportation Alternatives Program, a U.S. Department of Transportation initiative administered in South Carolina by SCDOT. Mace’s office worked with state officials and the town to support the application, including submitting a congressional letter of support.
Town officials say the project will create a safer route linking several neighborhoods to major community hubs, including Old Santee Canal Park, Moncks Corner Elementary School, Roper Hospital, and nearby businesses. The corridor is designed to give students, families, seniors, and visitors a more reliable way to move around town without relying on cars.

“When Moncks Corner needed help making its streets safer, we delivered,” Mace said in a statement. “South Carolina is the fourth fastest‑growing state in America, and investing in infrastructure isn’t optional—it’s essential. This $1.2 million grant is part of more than $400 million in federal infrastructure funding we’ve secured for the Lowcountry over the past two years.”
Moncks Corner Mayor Thomas J. Hamilton Jr. called the grant a major step forward for the town’s long‑term mobility goals.
“We’re incredibly grateful for the support of Congresswoman Mace for investing in Moncks Corner’s future,” Hamilton said. “This grant helps us take a meaningful step toward improving pedestrian safety and connectivity for our residents—especially our students, families and seniors.”
The Transportation Alternatives Program funds local projects that expand safe access for pedestrians and bicyclists, including sidewalks, bike paths, trails, and improvements near schools and transit stops. Town officials say the new corridor will support both safety and economic activity as Moncks Corner continues to grow.
