BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C. โ A major infrastructure project along Interstate 26 in Berkeley County is entering its final stages, with transportation officials saying work is on track to wrap up later this year.
The South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) announced the widening of I-26 between mile markers 187 and 193 is nearing completion. The project expands the interstate from four lanes to six, aiming to ease congestion and improve traffic flow in one of the regionโs fastest-growing areas.

In addition to adding lanes, crews are widening the highwayโs shoulders to enhance safety for drivers and emergency responders.
Work is also underway at Exit 187, where new roundabouts are being constructed at SC 27 (Ridgeville Road/Old Gilliard Road). Officials say the roundabouts are designed to improve traffic movement on and off the interstate while reducing delays.
Another key component of the project includes the full replacement of both eastbound and westbound bridges over the Cypress Swamp. The upgraded bridges are expected to be completed before the project wraps up.
Transportation officials say the entire project is currently scheduled for completion this fall.
Once finished, the improvements are expected to provide safer travel conditions and accommodate increasing traffic demand in Berkeley County and surrounding communities.
