MONCKS CORNER, S.C. — The family behind a well-known local restaurant is asking for community support after a sudden medical emergency left one of its owners fighting for his life.

In a Facebook post shared April 11, the family of Capy’s Italian Restaurant said co-owner Jack Capocciama was rushed to the hospital on March 31 after being diagnosed with what they described as “profound heart failure.”

“For a terrifying moment, we didn’t know if he would survive,” the family wrote, adding that nurses later told them quick action likely saved his life.

Capocciama has since returned home and is beginning what relatives say will be a long and uncertain recovery. But the emotional toll has been compounded by a growing financial burden.

According to the family, Capocciama was uninsured at the time of his diagnosis. Medical bills have already surpassed $150,000, with additional costs still pending for further tests and procedures. Those expenses include a life-saving defibrillator implant that alone is estimated to cost $50,000.

The situation has also impacted the family’s livelihood. Capy’s Italian Restaurant, located on East Main Street in Moncks Corner, has temporarily adjusted its hours as the family prioritizes Capocciama’s recovery. At the same time, a family member caring for him has been unable to work, further reducing household income.

“This is more than a situation—it’s our family,” the post reads. “Jack is a husband, father, son, brother, and a big part of the heart behind Capy’s.”

A GoFundMe campaign created on behalf of the Capocciama family echoes that message, describing Capocciama as a central figure in both the business and the family. The fundraiser emphasizes that beyond the mounting bills, the focus remains on giving him the time and support needed to heal.

Support from the community has already begun to pour in, with customers and neighbors sharing the family’s story and offering encouragement.

“We are so grateful for the love and support from this community,” the family said. “Whether you share this post, keep us in your thoughts, or support the restaurant—it truly means everything to us.”

For now, the Capocciama family says they are taking things day by day—grateful that Capocciama survived, and hopeful that community support will help them navigate the difficult road ahead.

Capy’s is located in the heart of downtown Moncks Corner at 323-A East Main St.
