BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C. — The Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office has been named Agency of the Year for DUI enforcement among large departments in South Carolina, officials announced Wednesday.

The honor was presented during the 2025 Highway Safety Law Enforcement Awards Ceremony, hosted by the South Carolina Department of Public Safety Office of Highway Safety and Justice Programs. The annual event recognizes law enforcement agencies and officers across the state for their commitment to reducing impaired driving and enhancing roadway safety.

Berkeley County earned the top distinction in the category for agencies with 101 or more officers, highlighting what officials described as a sustained and proactive approach to DUI enforcement.

Participating agencies are part of the South Carolina Law Enforcement Network and are also evaluated on their involvement in the statewide Law Enforcement Challenge, which promotes best practices in traffic safety initiatives.

Sheriff Duane Lewis said the recognition reflects the dedication of deputies working to keep the community safe.

“This recognition is a direct reflection of the hard work and dedication our deputies put in every single day to keep our roads safe,” Lewis said. “DUI enforcement is critical to protecting lives in our community, and I am incredibly proud of our traffic team for their commitment to this mission.”

The award underscores broader efforts across South Carolina to combat impaired driving, a leading factor in serious and fatal crashes. Officials say targeted enforcement, public awareness campaigns and coordinated operations have been key components in improving safety outcomes.

The sheriff’s office said it will continue focusing on proactive enforcement and public safety initiatives aimed at reducing impaired driving and making Berkeley County’s roadways safer for residents and visitors alike.
