โWhile this step was necessary, it does not diminish the gravity of the charges he faces or the pain this situation has caused our community,โ Rainwater said in a statement.
The resignation follows Hedgpethโs April 14 arrest on federal charges tied to an alleged child sex abuse case, an incident that has drawn widespread attention and concern across the Lowcountry.
City officials said they acted swiftly after the allegations first surfaced. On April 16, the city confirmed Hedgpethโs access to all municipal facilities, resources and technology had been revoked, and leaders were exploring all legal avenues to remove him from office prior to his resignation.
Authorities said the city continues to cooperate fully with Homeland Security Investigations. Officials are urging anyone with information related to the case to contact federal investigators.
Rainwater also addressed the emotional toll the situation has taken on the community, calling the allegations โhorrificโ and expressing support for the victims.
โWe are heartbroken as a city. We are shocked by the horrific allegations and saddened for the victims,โ she wrote in a separate April 17 message. โThe actions of one individual does not undermine the values that our community as a whole stands for.โ
City leaders are encouraging residents to come together in support. A community prayer gathering is scheduled for Sunday, April 19, from 7 to 8 p.m. at the Hanahan Amphitheater on Amphitheater Avenue.
โIn times like these, gathering as neighbors reminds us of the strength, care, and unity that define Hanahan,โ the city said in a public notice. โAll are welcome as we offer encouragement and pray together as one community.โ
Officials said they will continue to provide updates as the investigation unfolds and as the city works to fill the vacant council seat and restore leadership.
