According to authorities, the investigation began on May 20 after Bonneau Mayor Allen June contacted Sheriff Lewis regarding suspected financial irregularities involving the town’s Victim Compensation Fund.

June, who recently took office following a change in town leadership, told investigators he became aware of unauthorized transfers from a Town of Bonneau account to the personal bank account of a town employee.

A subsequent review of financial records, along with discussions involving town staff and council members, revealed that approximately $4,000 had been transferred from the account, according to the sheriff’s office.

Investigators said about half of the money—roughly $2,000—was later returned.

Following the discovery, June suspended Humbert pending the outcome of a criminal investigation.

Authorities did not release details about how long the transfers allegedly occurred or whether additional financial reviews are underway.

Humbert was ultimately booked into the Hill-Finklea Detention Center.

“We will continue to work with Bonneau town officials on issues facing the new administration,” Sheriff Lewis said in a statement.

June was sworn in as Bonneau’s mayor on May 18, becoming the town’s first mayor in 40 years.

He replaced longtime mayor Rembert Wrenn, who did not seek reelection after serving in the role since 1986.
