HANAHAN, S.C. โ The City of Hanahan has appointed a new Mayor Pro Tem, selecting a longtime council member and local pastor to step into the leadership role during a period of transition.
Adam Spurlock was appointed by city council on Monday night, officials announced. A lifelong Hanahan resident, Spurlock has served on council since 2020 after winning a special election and was re-elected in 2022.

Spurlock, who attended local schools including Hanahan High School, also serves as pastor at Restoration Community Church in the city.
His new role comes after the recent resignation of Kevin Phillip Hedgpeth, who stepped down from both city council and his leadership role on April 17 amid federal charges for possession and production of child sexual abuse material.
Mayor Christie Rainwater praised Spurlock’s appointment, calling him a steady and community-focused leader.
โAdam is exactly the kind of steady, community-rooted leader Hanahan needs at this moment,โ Rainwater said in a statement. โWe are grateful he has stepped into this role.โ
City officials say they are also working with the Berkeley County Election Commission to schedule a special election to fill a vacant council seat. Details on that election are expected to be announced soon.
In a statement, Spurlock said he is honored to serve the community where he was raised.
โHanahan is a resilient city, and I am committed to helping move us forward with integrity and purpose,โ he said. โI ask for the communityโs continued trust as we navigate this together.โ
The city thanked residents for their patience and support as leaders work through the transition.
