BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C. โ€” MUSC Health is expanding its footprint in the Lowcountry with a new medical facility designed to bring specialty care closer to rapidly growing communities.

Officials broke ground this week on the Nexton Medical Pavilion, an $87 million, four-story facility expected to improve access to care for residents in areas like Moncks Corner and Summerville.

The 80,000-square-foot building will house a wide range of services, including imaging, infusion services, breast health, rehabilitation therapies, and multiple medical specialties such as cardiology, neurology, orthopedics and OB-GYN.

Dr. Gene Hong, chief executive physician for MUSC Physicians and MUSC Health, said the project reflects a broader mission to expand care while training future providers and advancing research.

โ€œWe are proud to serve as a place where patients receive outstanding care, future providers are trained in nationally recognized academic programs and transformational research elevates quality of life,โ€ Hong said.

Leaders say the new pavilion is part of a larger effort to keep pace with the regionโ€™s population growth. Berkeley County officials project that Moncks Corner and Summerville will add nearly 29,000 residents over the next five years โ€” an increase of about 10%.

Johnny Cribb called the project a key investment in the countyโ€™s future.

โ€œAs our county and region continue to expand, projects like this help strengthen the local health care system, enhance quality of life and support long-term well-being for the families who live and work here,โ€ Cribb said.

The pavilion is expected to serve up to 800 patients each day once it opens, helping reduce travel times for residents who currently must leave the area for specialized care.

The new facility will be located near existing MUSC Health services in Nexton, across from the MUSC Hollings Cancer Center at Nexton and the MUSC Health Nexton Medical Center.

Construction is expected to be completed by fall 2027.
