Berkeley County to Open Major Boat Landing at New Waterfront Park

Six ramps and expanded trailer parking debut May 15 ahead of full park opening in June

Berkeley County plans to open public boat access at its new Waterfront Park site at 933 Broughton Avenue in Moncks Corner on Friday, May 15, 2026.

MONCKS CORNER, S.C. — Boaters in Berkeley County will soon have expanded access to Lake Moultrie as officials prepare to open a major portion of the county’s long-anticipated Waterfront Park site at 933 Broughton Avenue in Moncks Corner later this month.

Berkeley County leaders announced that public boat access at the new Waterfront Park site on Broughton Avenue in Moncks Corner will officially open May 15. The early opening includes all six boat ramps along with parking for at least 180 boat trailers, including accessible spaces and designated make-ready and tie-down areas.

The broader park, however, will remain closed as construction continues. Officials say a full grand opening is expected June 12, when visitors will be able to access beaches and additional amenities.

The roughly 15-acre site along Lake Moultrie has been undergoing a significant transformation, evolving into a major water recreation hub for the community. Plans for the park include marina space for approximately 36 boats, a 4,200-square-foot open-air pavilion, and a 0.6-mile walking trail looping around the landing.

Once complete, the park will also feature two beaches totaling 58,000 square feet, picnic shelters, public restrooms and a renovated 7,300-square-foot pavilion designed for event rentals. Additional features include a 100-foot flagpole, security cameras, free Wi-Fi and power hookups for vendors during events.

Public safety infrastructure is also a key component of the project. The site will include emergency call stations connected to 911 and a dedicated enclosure and dock for the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office Safe Boat, allowing for rapid response on the water.

The project also includes a 565-foot break wall and dredging to a depth of 7.5 feet to improve navigation and shoreline protection.

County officials say opening the boat ramps ahead of the full park launch is a strategic move to address growing demand.

“Opening Atkins Landing in advance of the park opening is critical to meet the demand of our boating community and to relieve the overcrowding at other landing sites,” said Berkeley County Supervisor Johnny Cribb. “We are excited and look forward to opening the entire park very soon.”

The Waterfront Park project carries a total cost of approximately $10.5 million. Funding sources include Berkeley County water recreation funds, accommodations tax revenues, state budget appropriations and a grant from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service administered through the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources. Santee Cooper has also provided a long-term lease for the site.

Some project costs were reduced through in-house work by county departments, including Roads & Bridges and Facilities & Grounds, as well as contributions from Santee Cooper.

The park’s development builds on years of planning aimed at expanding public access to Lake Moultrie, a popular destination for boating and fishing in the Lowcountry. Once fully open, officials expect the site to serve as both a recreational centerpiece and an economic driver for the area.
