BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C. — Three people were shot inside the Publix at Cane Bay on Thursday in what Berkeley County Sheriff Duane Lewis says was a targeted attack, not an active‑shooter situation. All three suspects are now in custody.
Lewis said the shooting unfolded inside the store when three individuals targeted a specific person. That person — the intended target — was shot twice and rushed into surgery.
Two additional victims suffered minor gunshot wounds, according to the sheriff.
“This was not an active shooter,” Lewis said. “This was a situation where an individual was targeted by three other individuals while they were inside the Publix.”
Deputies responded to the store, located at 1724 State Road, just after the shooting occurred. A heavy law enforcement presence remained on scene for hours as investigators processed evidence and interviewed witnesses.
Authorities say there is no ongoing threat to the community now that all suspects have been detained.
Residents were initially urged to avoid the area and use alternate routes while the scene was secured.
