BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C. — Three juveniles have been charged in connection with a targeted shooting inside the Publix at Cane Bay that left three people wounded and sent shoppers scrambling for safety Thursday night, according to Berkeley County Sheriff Duane Lewis.

Sheriff Lewis said Antwan Green, 17, is being charged as an adult. Two additional suspects, both 16, are also facing charges.

Deputies were dispatched to the grocery store just before 9 p.m. for reports of a shooting with unknown victims. The first deputies arrived within one minute, Lewis said.

A targeted attack inside the store

According to investigators, Green and the two other juveniles entered the store, located at 1724 State Road, and quickly located their intended target. Green then pulled out a handgun and began firing.

The victim ran through the store as shots were fired down aisle 10, striking two innocent bystanders in the process.

One woman shopping with her children was hit by gunfire but managed to escape the store and seek help at a nearby business. A Publix employee working in the self‑checkout area was also shot.

Deputies found the intended victim at the front of the store suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.

Suspects flee; all three captured

After the shooting, Green and one suspect fled toward the back of Cane Bay, heading in the direction of Black Tom Road. The third suspect ran to a nearby gas station and attempted to get a ride from a stranger. The witness refused but ordered an Uber for him — and later provided deputies with critical information that led to his arrest.

Investigators later located the second juvenile suspect, and Green was found by K‑9 teams while fleeing through a neighborhood.

Sheriff: “A senseless act of violence”

Sheriff Lewis condemned the attack, calling it another example of rising violence involving juveniles.

“This was a senseless act of violence that placed innocent families, children, and workers directly in harm’s way,” Lewis said. “Residents should never have to experience this kind of chaos while simply shopping for groceries. We are seeing an alarming increase in violence involving juveniles, and it is something that should concern every parent and every community member.”

Lewis also praised the rapid response from partnering agencies, saying their teamwork “played a major role in bringing this dangerous situation under control quickly.”
