BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C. — Hanahan High School was evacuated Tuesday after a bomb threat was reported to the Hanahan Police Department, prompting a large law enforcement response and a full sweep of the campus, according to the Berkeley County School District.
The threat, which came in via telephone, led administrators to remove all students and staff from the building “out of an abundance of caution,” BCSD spokesperson Katie Tanner said. No one was allowed to enter the campus while officers worked to determine whether the threat was credible.
Shortly before 1 p.m., bomb‑detecting dogs had arrived to conduct a thorough search of the school. Although authorities said they had no credible evidence of an actual device, the investigation remained active and the building stayed closed until the sweep was complete. District officials told parents that the school schedule would be adjusted to ensure all students received lunch once operations resumed.
At approximately 2:30 p.m., law enforcement completed the sweep and advised that the campus was safe. Students and staff were allowed to re‑enter the building, and normal school operations resumed for the remainder of the day.
“Please allow students and staff time to safely re‑enter the building before attempting to come onto campus,” Tanner said in an update to families. “Thank you for your patience and cooperation as law enforcement worked to ensure the safety and security of our students and staff.”
Authorities have not released additional details about the source of the threat. The investigation is ongoing.
