MONCKS CORNER, S.C. — Boaters in Berkeley County will soon have access to a new launching point along Lake Moultrie as county officials prepare to partially open the new Berkeley County Waterfront Park this week.

Beginning Friday, May 15, all six boat ramps and approximately 180 boat trailer parking spaces at the new park will officially open to the public starting at 6 a.m., according to Berkeley County officials.

The new waterfront facility is located at 933 Broughton Road in Moncks Corner along the shores of Lake Moultrie, one of South Carolina’s premier freshwater recreation destinations.

County leaders say the partial opening marks a major milestone in the multi-million-dollar redevelopment project aimed at expanding public access to the lake and boosting outdoor recreation opportunities in Berkeley County.

Along with the boat ramps and parking areas, public restroom facilities will also be available when the site opens Friday.

However, officials emphasized that the remainder of the approximately 15-acre park remains under active construction and is currently closed to the public. Access outside the designated boat launching and trailer parking areas is prohibited until construction is complete.

A formal grand opening celebration for the full park is anticipated on Friday, June 12.

The overall Waterfront Park project carries a price tag of roughly $10.5 million. Funding for the development comes from multiple sources, including Berkeley County Delegation Water Recreation Funds, Berkeley County accommodations tax funds, South Carolina state budget appropriations and a grant administered through the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service and the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources.

Officials also credited Santee Cooper for providing Berkeley County with a long-term lease for the property at no cost.

Additional construction and infrastructure costs were reduced through work completed in-house by Berkeley County Roads & Bridges, Berkeley County Facilities & Grounds and Santee Cooper crews.
